The weather forecast is calling for continued hot, dry conditions for at least the next few days with very little precipitation on the horizon. The winds we have been experiencing are expected to continue and there is a chance of a small cold front moving in Sunday through Monday carrying isolated gusty winds. Our relative humidity is very low during the day and, combined with the heat and wind, we have strong burning conditions. FROM RDEK IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION – All Lakes / Water Bodies in this Area Closing to Public Access as Part of Backcountry Closure effective 1PM this afternoon Just got confirmation minutes ago from the Ministry. The backcountry closure that goes into effect today at 1pm across covers all Crown land. Water surfaces in BC are considered Crown — and as such there will be NO access to any lakes, rivers, water in the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. So no public access to land or water. RDEK Update

Good morning,   They are hoping to conduct that controlled burn on the east side of Island Pond fire today.  We do expect it will generate a lot of smoke – so if you see the smoke / plume increase this afternoon, I wanted to reassure you it is part of their planned controlled burn.   The estimated fire size has not changed and they are now estimating it to be 35% contained.   They have the full set of resources on the fire again Continue reading →

Quick Update – Island Pond Fire RDEK

FROM RDEK I just got an update on the Island Pond Fire and wanted to share it with you.   The fire is now estimated at 1150 hectares. The south and southeast flanks of the fire are currently holding well with machine guarding and air support – as they’ve dropped both water and retardant again today.   They have also done some machine guarding from the south to the east flank today and are continuing those efforts.   The fire is more active currently on the Continue reading →

RDEK Board Highlights

CBT region Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program funding approved for 2017/2018 The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors June 9 approved funding $1,235,971 in funding for 138 projects around the. The funding comes from Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Programs, which are administered by the RDEK. After considering public input and recommendations from the municipalities and Electoral Area Directors, the board approved the funding. Good afternoon everyone, There was an exciting announcement in Fairmont this afternoon as Minister Bill Bennett, on behalf of Minister Yamamoto, announced $1.47 million in funding for Phase 2 of the RDEK’s Fairmont Flood and Debris Flow Mitigation Project.
